Lula: Travels to COP27
This is good for Lula. It is good that before he is even inaugurated, he gets to arrange bilateral meetings and that he gets to discuss planetary issues.
On Monday, Brazil’s President-elect Lula da Silva traveled to Egypt to take part in the United Nations Conference on Climate Change (COP27).
“Brazil, which was diplomatically isolated during the administration of the far-right, climate-skeptic President Jair Bolsonaro, has new hope,” the French outlet Les Echos commented on the Workers’ Party leader, adding that “Lula is expected in Egypt as if he were a star.”
On Wednesday, Lula da Silva will participate in the event “Charter from the Amazon: a common agenda for climate transition,” in which he will be accompanied by several governors from the Amazon region.
Lula da Silva will make a statement at the COP27 plenary, which is being held in Sharm el Sheikh, a hotel complex on the shores of the Red Sea. I have not seen it yet, although it must have happened.
All looks good yes? Peachy keen yes? No, not really.
The Brazilian Military Commanders Navy, Army, and Air Force questioned the outcome of the Brazilian presidential election. Not very loud, not very clear, but still. https://www.telesurenglish.net/news/Brazilians-Criticize-Military-Commanders-Joint-Statement-20221111-0010.html
In the meantime, the transition team has real trouble getting real statistics from the previous administration. Somehow the statistical and satellite data for the Amazon in Brazil for the previous of year? Well, it is hard to find it. The previous administration of course is fat and happy and rich with whatever they sold off to deforestation. However we mistrust Cop and climate issues, this is a good place for Lula to speak his first international words. Brazil’s VP-Elect Demands Access to Amazon Deforestation Data

Yes, I agree Amarynth… nevertheless it seems that Mr Global and his cohorts are pulling out all the stops in trying to turn the tide against Lula and make Brazil basically ungovernable. I am gobsmacked that so much of the western world is missing the obvious parallels between Lula and… Read more »
This may be helpful to you .. it is not exactly perfect but contains a bunch of accurate history on Bolsonaro. I would not go with that opinion in the beginning that there is a “conservative tide” sweeping Latin America. But it does a good job detailing the complexities. https://www.opendemocracy.net/en/5050/brazil-election-bolsonaro-far-right-movement-latin-america/… Read more »
Bolsonaro Supporters Demand Military Intervention to Prevent Lula From Taking Power
Brazilians gathered en masse outside army barracks in Brasilia calling for military intervention that would prevent newly elected Lula da Silva from taking presidential office next year.
